Here's a mainstream site that I sometimes visit for some free javascripts:

It has lots of ads and other things to dodge around, but once you locate the
list of category links, there are literally thousands of pre written scripts
that you can use for free. There is also a link for tutorials and after a
little bit of playing around with some of the simpler scripts, at least I
have been able to write a couple of my own.
