Hi Joseph, Great directions. Could you tell me, on the ones that are just numbers and letters, where I can go to find out what program they are associated with? I have noticed that some of them have huge numbers. Like outlook has over 66 thousand. And it has been open for a long time. I'm going to continue watching them for a while. Ok, I watched them long enough, now it went up to over 67 thousand. And right when I was going to send this email, I had to close out outlook because it started talking gibberish. And when I fired up outlook, I went straight to the processes, and outlook was at 41 thousand. And it is climbing again. Can you tell me how to fix this?O yeah. one other thing, is there a way to find out what programs are running in the background? And I don't know if this matters, but in the system configuration utility, I have three selections, and they are, Normal start up, load all device drivers and services. This one is checked Diagnostic start up, load basic devices and services only. And, Selective start up, I have wondered about this several times. Do you know what this should be set at? Thank you for all of the help. Roger Bachelder Hi there, In order to do that, you'll need to go to Task Manager. Press CTRL+Alt+Delete to bring up Task Manager, then press CTRL+TAB to go to Processes tab. Arrow through it and listen to the entries carefully. The last thing with the number followed by the word "K" indicates its memory usage. For example, if we want to see how much JAWS eats memory, you'll need to find jfw.exe entry. It should look like this: Jfw.exe System 00 24312K Where "jfw.exe" is the name of the program, "System" is the account which the program uses (System means the Operating System), "00" is the CPU memory location, and the "24312K" means that JAWS is using about 24312 kilobytes of memory (about 22 MB). If the last value (the number with the K, or mem usage value) continuously increases without any sign of decrease, that menas that it is using a whole bunch of memory, thereby slowing down your computer. Too much RAM usage means that other programs does not have enough memory to process its program requests. In order to really know if the program is continuously using more and more memory, you'll need to monitor this value at a regular interval (about 5 minute interval might work). Thanks, Roger Hi there, Sounds like a memory leak--where a program fails to release RAM after it has finished with it. This sometimes happens, and the only way to exit this dilema is to uninstall the offending program (too many anti-spyware programs may slow your computer; one is fine).
