Thanks for all the help with deciding about antivirus programs. Think I will try it also. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)" <Ted.Lisle@xxxxxx>

Yep, you're right on your old Communist bloc nations. Anyhow, I'm probably going to install the brand new version in the next few days, as soon as I make sure all my Norton remnants are gone (thought they were, but now have reason to suspect otherwise). Maybe it'll move a little faster for me too. Funny thing, the download speed on the new program file seemed to be truly awful, but the download time wasn't that far off. But I digress. The main point here is that it's a neat program that's easy to maintain and speech friendly. So I have to also admit that I've never been hit with the reminder, because it's rare that my computer isn't on around 9 AM, when this update happens, or that I'm more than a day behind. As far as download time goes, my experience is really different from yours, and I'm just using a very low-speed DSL connection, not an expensive levelof service. But the download update happens in a flash for me, just a few seconds, and that's much, much quicker than it used to in the last version of the program, which took a bit longer. So maybe the server has moved from where you said (actually, there isn't a Czechoslovakia anymore) to some place a little closer, like Rumania or Bulgaria. Who knows. :-)----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)" <Ted.Lisle@xxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 10:10 AM Subject: RE: antivirus program No, not at all. Yardbird is correct about the automatic once per day updates, but I often forget about that as I'm not always on, and it will remind you, when it thinks it's been long enough. That brings up one additional point. If you're on dial up, downloads can be sinfully slow. The one saving grace is they're usually fairly small. I'll swear I got better speed from my old 14.4 modem with 4-1 compression. I think the server is in Czechoslovakia, and it must have to bounce around the world a time or two. It is S--L--O--O--W! By which I mean the current version of AVG Free. Because you say it reminds you to update. With mine, the update is done automatically at thesametime every day. I think you can reset that time, just as you can changethetime of the daily scan, but I haven't looked, because the process isn't an inconvenience for me. You don't have to to do anything. AVG flashesamessage notifying you that it's beginning an online update (if youhave abroadband connection like DSL and cable, you're always online, so you don't have to actually be on the Web or anything at that moment; AVG willjustgo look for its update files). The only hassle I notice is that ifyou'reblind or very low vision and using a screen reader, you may be usingthekeyboard to type and press Windows and screen readers commands duringthisprocess, accidentally giving the order to cancel the update, either asitbegins or when it flashes a second notice telling you that the updateissuccessfully finished. Each time, it shows what must be a littledialoguewindow with a couple of buttons, like OK and cancel, which you canpressby accident if you're typing at the moment. But it doesn't take long to recognize the Windows chime sounds that alert you to these dialoguesorask you if you really want to cancel the update at either point inn the process, just because you were writing and spell checking an email message andhitCancel in the midst of it. And if you're nervous thinking you have canceled the update, you can always go to the AVG Control Center item in yourtasktray, where it resides, launch it,press F9 to check for updates, andgothrough it again, this time being careful to wait the few seconds ittakesto happen. In fact, I was typing the end of that last sentence when Igotthe Windows chimes you get when you try to type somewhere incorrectly,soI just took my hands off for a second, pressed Insert B to read which dialogue this was (it was the one to say the update had been successfully done)andclick the OK button to close the dialogue. It's really not much trouble. And, of cores, you can do this manuallybylaunching the AVG control center anytime you wish. Though you don'thaveto keep doing it all day. If AVG thinks one update daily is safe enough,I'mwilling to go with that and not worry that some new, lethal virus isgoingto hit me three hours after the update unless I update constantly, hopingthey've written new code to defend against it in those three hours. Hope this helps.----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)" <Ted.Lisle@xxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 5:05 AM Subject: RE: antivirus program You can schedule scans. Updates are pretty easy. First, it'll remind you, just as Norton always did. Second, any time you happen to be ontheWeb, just open the program and hit F9. If memory serves (and I set it up and have pretty well left it alone), you set up scans from the main control center. Furthermore, you can get a PDF copy of the user manual from the Web site.
