Yeah, I eventually did that, but it's strange because I don't have the 
loss-of-focus problem on any of my other computers;  just the new work 
computer.

Tom,

Did you try pressing ALT+TAB when it lost focus to see if the message
was open but the focus just wasn't on it? That is a very common problem
with Outlook, but I haven't seen it as often in Outlook Express.
