Word problem with JAWS

I need to fill out questionnaires in Word. The questions are formatted in
such a way that they are protected by the author, and there is a grayed area
where the answers can be written. JAWS won't read these documents. All I can
get JAWS to say is "Type your answer here." The JAWS curser will read part
of the questions, but I can't match the questions with the correct grayed
area. I've tried changing the view menu, going into the properties and
tweaking a couple of things, but nothing helps. Can someone offer some
advice? Thanks.
