Point well taken. But you have to admit that if somebody takes the time to creat a useful wwidget the research it feature is good enough... not for paying 200 for a lincense... But I still haven't found someone that makes those widgets so... again... point taken.

Howdy, Glad someone found them useful. I don't understand why you wouldn't just google and go to amazon directly or the weather underground link to get weather though. It's what I do. I have yet to encounter a situation where it would so much as occur to me to turn to my screen reader as a search tool for information on the web. That's what my web browser is for. My screen reader is for, well, amazingly, astoundingly enough, reading my screen. I even have the unreasonable expectation of being able to have it read the screen in any application I choose whether it's powerpoint's notes pane and outline view, Publisher's wizards for creating a completion certificate, adobe captivate's test creation tools, (I'm a trainer, remember), Open Office's wordprocesser, spreadsheet or presentation suite whenever I want to create a daisy book or import a pdf file, write a file to braille--but I can't because Jaws doesn't support this free application that seems to have people bending over backwards to add extensions blind people would find so handy--, and on and on and on. Instead I get an app that gives me a web searching tool I don't use, breaks functionality it previously had, seems to be involved in an endless game of catchup whenever anything new comes out anywhere (citrix anyone?), and, expects me to pay a couple hundred bucks every year or two to keep buying it and that's if they don't take it into their head to charge extra for something I need. but hey, Jaws now reads the doohicky on www.coolplace.com whenever you click on the thingamabob link. Ah, how nice. $200 well- spent, I say! Or, was it $500, no matter, I roll in money. Grows on that big tree in my backyard my dog fertilizes every morning. It's true that most of the app (or are they called widgets... Idon't rememeber) on it I don't use and I know that most of you don't usethem either. But the UPS, the late FedEX app (that I still wonder why theytook it out), the wikctionary, the wikipedia, amazon and the money converter are great. I use them all the time. So, it's not a waste of time. Yet. Sometimes, though, Jaws will break an existing feature in a new version that you need for your work and, so, you are stuck. For instance, Jaws 10 works well with applications using the java access bridge and the java runtime environment version 1.5. Same thing for 1.6 and 1.4 and so on. Now, Jaws 11, on the other hand, seems to choke when it encounters web applets that sit on a 1.5 or earlier jre. I know, I had trouble with this at work. By sheer dumb luck, I accidentally upgraded to jre 1.6 and Jaws 11 read the web applets fine. Unfortunately, we have a core component system that will not run on anything after jre 1.5 because it was built on a 1.1 platform. It's archaic. But, we need it. So, I have to keep jaws 10 at work even though my SMA entitles me to jfw 11. I have both on the same machine and switch back and forth as needed. These days, that old component is less and less used but, it is still necessary to use form time to time. I use 11 on another component system that is newer and will run on jre 1.6. I have no idea what caused jaws to break it's previous functionality with stuff running on 1.5 but I do have my suspicions. Something to do with that word count app and the research it and the filtering of repeated characters. Seems to make an unholy brew. Frankly, I think they were a total waste of developer man power. I mean, NFL scors are nice but they don't make you more productive at work. Job Access With Speech or was it Job Access Work Station. Does that sound like something that should be focused on sports scores and the like when considering what new perks to add to their software? There are apps which are used in the work place that fs is ignoring because enhancing web support and making such and such a website is easier than say, making Microsoft Publisher accessible or making Adobe Captivate, powerpoint 2007 or Open Office fully accessible. Or, better yet, really making jaws work well with UIA. That's hard. Might mean releasing fewer versions at a time. Hurts SMA sales since it only covers 2 version upgrades. The more versions you can crank out in a year, the more often someone has to renew their SMA. It's all money-driven. Alex M On 8/4/10, Yadiel <yadosotomayor@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:Maybe it's just me. But I paid for a SMA license and if I don't upgradeI'llloose it. I don't know if I need or not, but I paid for it. So I betterenjoy what it brings to the table. who knows. One of the new features mentioned in the JAWS 12 preview I posted yesterday is a "virtual ribbon" option that will emulate the classic menus in Office 2003 while retaining the ribbon menu structure everyone loves to hate. Forthose of you who do not plan to upgrade to JAWS 12, I just discovered agreat little app called Ubit Menu that adds the classic Office 2003 menus tothe Office 2007/10 ribbon menu. Once you download and install this app,you bring up the ribbon menu by pressing Alt, right arrow to the Menu tab and hit Enter. Then you can tab and shift tab through the various classic 2003 menu options for Word, Excel and Power Point. It works well with JAWS 9,and does not disrupt the existing ribbon menu structure in any way. Soyou can have your cake and eat it too; classic Office 2003 menus, or the newerand more frustrating Office 2007/10 ribbon menus. So who needs JAWS 12anyway? Besides, Ubit Menu is availabel now, so you don't have to wait for JAWS 12 to be released. http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/ Gerald-- JFW related links: JFW homepage: http://www.freedomscientific.com/ Scripting mailing list: http://lists.the-jdh.com/listinfo.cgi/scriptography-the-jdh.com JFW List instructions: To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send a message tojfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.Archives located at: //www.freelists.org/archives/jfw Alternative archives located at: http://n2.nabble.com/JAWS-for-Windows-f2145279.htmlIf you have any concerns about the list, post received from the list, orthe way the list is being run, do not post them to the list.
