Volume adjustments in control panel conundrum

Greetings one and all:
As of about a week or so ago I have encountered the following dilemma. On my
Windows XP, home edition computer with JAWS version 5.0 installed on it, I have
problems making adjustments in the volume sub-heading that is found in the
"sounds and audio" heading in the control panel.
When ever I attempt to do such things as place a "volume" icon in my computers
system tray for example my computer will start spouting off that "Windows
cannot display the volume on that task bar because the volume control program
has not been installed. To install it use add/remove programs in the control
panel".
This seems like an appropriate thing to do except for the baffling matter of
where might one go to find this "volume" program that is lurking hidden in the
add/remove programs heading of the control panel?

This would all be fine and dandy except for the fact that prior to this problem
happening about a week ago I had no problems adding/removing a volume icon in
the system tray/task bar or modifying the microphone recording and volume
levels in the "sounds and audio" heading in the control panel, as I do now.

As another addition to this perplexing matter all other volume controls work
within my computers system such as adjusting the volume on media/audio players
etc.

Any thoughts on the matter, aside from new and improved phrases of which to
call my dastardly computer(grin), would be kindly accepted.
Tootled doo,
Dennis
