Bruce,
I've just read all the help files for the pronunciation dictionary in my 
upgraded jaws, and everything is now illuminated.  In reply to what you say 
below, thank you for the explanation, but my question specifically addressed 
itself to what I had encountered in the dictionary manager, not to a larger 
concept of which these newer functions are a part.  That's all.

The reason this example was dug up for you is that the sounds feature is
related, whether using the graphics dictionary or the pronunciation
dictionary. Understanding of one facilitates understanding of the other:
they both work the same way, one with graphics and one with pronunciation.
