Sandy,
The problem is probably in the advance and options settings of scan disk in
Windows 98.
You shouldn't have to shut down JAWS or disconnect your DSL.
Try this when running scan disk:
1. Open scan disk.
2. press the tab key to advance...
3. pres the enter key.
4. press the tab key to display summary.
5. press the down arrow until it says always.
6. press the tab key once.
7. press the down arrow until it says replace log file.
8. press the tab key once.
9. press the down arrow until it says cross linked files delete.
10. press the tab key once.
11. press the down arrow key until it says lost file fragments free.
12. Press the tab key once to check files for invalid file names.
13. press the spacebar to check this option if it is unchecked.
14. press the tab key once to check files for invalid dates and times.
15. Press the spacebar to check this option if it is unchecked.
16. press the tab key once to check files for duplicate names.
17. press the spacebar to uncheck this option if it is checked.
18. press the tab key once to check host drive first.
19. press the spacebar to check this if it is unchecked.
20. press the tab key once to report MS DOS mode.
21. press the spacebar to uncheck this option if it is checked.
22. press the tab key once to Okay.
23. press the enter key.
24. press the tab key once to select your drive.
25. press the down or up arrow to the drive you want to scan.
26. press the tab key once to type of test.
27. press the down arrow key to thorough.
28. press the tab key once to type of test options...
29. press the enter key.
Note. the problem you are having is probably in here.
30. press the tab key until area of the disk to be scanned.
31. press the down arrow key until it says system and data.
32. press the tab key once to do not perform write testing.
33. press the spacebar to check this option if it is unchecked.
This is usually the main culprit!
34. press the tab key once to do not repair bad sectors in hidden and system
files.
35. press the spacebar to uncheck this option if it is checked.
36. press the tab key once to Okay.
37. press the enter key.
38. press the tab key once to automatically fix errors.
39. press the spacebar once to check this option if it is unchecked.
40. press the tab key once to start.
41. press the enter key.
Note. sometimes the dialog box that the scan disk has restarted 10 times
will pop up. If this happens, press the n key for no. It won't pop up
anymore and the scan disk will run just fine.
