Chris,

Generally, automatic updates occur once per week usually on Wednesday
afternoon. However, Symantec does occasionally automatically update more
often if there is a high threat virus or worm.

As somebody else pointed out, however, you can do a manual update and they
have manual updates posted there daily. As a current example, the last
automatic live update was posted April 7 and detects 66,312 viruses. However,
if you did a manual update now, you would get virus definitions updated as of
April 10 which will detect 66,348 virus, an increase of 36 viruses. These and
others will obviously be included in the next automatic update, but this just
points out if you are extremely conscientious about keeping your security
updated, you should check their site daily for latest definitions and security
advisories.

To get the updates, go to:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html

Here's how to install them manually:

The file will start with the year and look similar to the following:

5. At the next dialog box, save the file to the Desktop and click Save.
6. After the file is downloaded, close Internet Explorer, and any other
running software programs.
7. Double-click the file that was saved to the desktop. The virus definitions
will be updated.
