I haven't let messages open in the preview pane for years but only
recently did I learn about actually shutting off the Preview Pane all
together. When I actually shut off the Preview Pane some loss of speech
issues with went away.
Look under View, Layout. Be sure that the checkbox labeled "Show
Preview Pane" is unchecked.
