Subject: RE: MS Essential

I have been using Microsoft Essentials on a variety of computers, and am
very very happy with how it works! It seems to be really good at catching
most nasties. I would not have vouched for anything from Microsoft even
several months ago, but Microsoft Security Essentials has saved my butt a
few times now.

Go ahead and download it. Then uninstall your old virus program, do a
reboot, and then install Essentials. Make sure it does an initial scan, and
set it up to do a weekly scan on schedule. Do not pick 2 a.m. on a Sunday
as your time, however, even though this is the default. I found an
interesting issue with using this particular time when Daylight Savings Time
rolled around. You can read more about that experience
here:

http://www.geeknewscentral.com/2010/03/14/daylight-savings-time-and-the-
auto-scan/

Yes, that was a bit of a shameless plug, but I blog regularly for Geek News
Central and talk about all kinds of things, not just those that are
disability-related.

Anyway, I do like Essentials and recommend it at this time as a great way to
keep your machines clean. I've been using it since about Christmas, when my
daughter got a nasty virus on her new Netbook I bought her, not even a week
after I gave it to her. The virus program I had been using on her machine
did not catch the virus, yet her machine was hosed. Took me the better part
of a day to fix it, and in the end, it was Essentials that did the hard
work.
