Dave,

Excellent advice!  Previous editions of Windows provided a "checkdisk" tool.
I don't believe XP and beyond does.  It may be because hard drives have
gotten to be huge.

No criticism, but you should run a disk checking program on any drive or
disk before using a program to defragment any drive or disk that you want
defragmented.
 
Very often, defragmenting programs cannot or, will not, complete their task
if the programs encounter incorrectly assigned track, sector and data errors
on a hard drive or disk.  That is why running a disk checking program first
is so important.
