ok, next, try changing your windows sound scheme to something else;
after you change it, be sure to "test" several of the files which you
expect to play (use the startup and the shutdown ones that should be
triggered).  You should be able to highlight them in the list and there
should be a "test" button which will play them.  The thing I'm looking
for is to make sure they have been removed somehow.
