Loss of Sounds

I've found that whenever I turn off my PC for any length of time, say 24 hours, the usual warning and confirmation sounds don't play when I reboot. I'm referring to the beeps indicating the arrival of a new message, MS's rude warnings that a document already exists, and so on. Also, the XP music doesn't play after I type in my password. In the past, the sounds have come back after a second or third reboot, but not this time.

I went into the control panel and then the sounds and audio manager, but nothing I've tried has brought them back. Audio recordings play fine, and that monkey associated with the otherwise wonderful Text Monkey application still laughs in his or her ill-tempered way.

Any suggestions?
