Robert,
I understand, but it jus sounds as if an awful lot of people feel themselves
to be in this position and are simply against using the updater, as you're
calling it, which sounds to me like a handy way to refer to it.

I don't know. Personally, the few times I've used the updater myself, it
hasn't caused any problem at all, which is why I have remained mystified,
because no one that I can recall has actually explained what went wrong for
them when they did the update this way.

Oh, well. The testimony of you guys today is good enough for me. I already
downloaded my update file from the FS site last night, so this time I'll go
ahead and run the Wizard and be done with it. But next time I won't go to
such needless trouble again.

Thanks.

Some people have had issues with the update feature.

They would receive an error while doing the update process.

Sometimes this could be resolved by doing a repair on jaws and then running
the updater again.

If the problem was still there then you had know choice but to download a
full version of the program and install it that way.

Hi Geoff,

Yes, that's reassuring. You mean there was something broken in the auto
download version you got that time, and it caused OE to misbehave? And the
full version, installed from the site download, rectified the problem?

I hope they are more consistent in their quality control with the automated
update file version, now! Thanks again.

Out of all the times I used the check for updates method, I only ran in to
trouble once. That was with an older version of Jaws. Jaws was saying
something it shouldn't be saying in Outlook Express and I had to download
and install the new update from the FS website. Since then, I have had no
problems. I used the check for updates method to download and install the
latest Jaws update and everything seems to be working fine. I hope this
gives you some reassurance.

Cheers.

Geoff

As a new update to Jaws 9 has been released, I'm going to install it. I know

how to do this both of the ways I mention in the subject line.

However, I have never understood exactly how the two methods differ, aside
from the actions you take to do them. Naturally, even though I know how to
go to the Jaws Central area of the FS site and find the latest update file,
and then run it as an install process myself, I'm attractted to the
simplified, easier method of just using the update feature on the Help menu.

But there are always discussions on these mailing lists that make it sound
as if the two methods are substantively different, and there seem to be
;jurists who believe that using the update feature is a halfway measure that

may not properly modify your existing copy of Jaws, and may cause problems.
These people seem to believe that the only right and safe way to do an
update is to download the latest file from FS, which is a complete
replacement for the program, I think, and install it yourself.

Could anyone explain the origin of this disagreement, and shed some
practical light on the topic? As I said, if I were sure that using the
update feature were really responsible and safe, I'd certainly prefer it to
having to go to FS, download the huge file and then go through an install
wizard procedure.

teaksThanks.
