Bruce, Yes. Not to mention that a hard-hitting investigative effort by someone on another list has revealed that FS deliberately releases updates for eachversion that are programmed to damage it beyond repair, in order to justifytheir coming out with the next paid or SMA release a few months later. Noteveryone agrees with this theory, but it reflects some of the stress peoplefeel about the unseen machinations of the FS Death Star. What a world, what a world. I'm melting.... stree----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Toews" <KetchupBoy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 2:09 PM Subject: Re: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS Because you see people writing essays expressing their trepidation and so on, and that scares people away. bruce -- An accessible captcha solution that does not take into account the needs of the deaf-blind is no acceptable solution at all. I remain puzzled why so many users apparently disregard this convenience and scurry about every time there's an update discussing where to find the file and how to download it. Just don't get it. But I explained that in another recent message. Thanks again. ----- Original Message ----- From: "RAWest" <rawest@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 12:35 PM Subject: RE: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS Believe it is slightly smaller than the full .exe download. Remember when you download the file from fs windows installer opens duringinstall. Using jaws update this part of the installation is bypassed. Itjust installs it using your current settings. So that is how it is treated as an update. To find me you can do the following. Are you saying that what the update method installed for you appeared to be the exact size of the full program? Or is that number showing that it's only a smaller file than the full program? Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "RAWest" <rawest@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 11:29 AM Subject: RE: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS Hello Well just on the last update, I used the update feature and the file size it downloaded was 58 mega bytes So the only thing I know is that using this method gets you out of using the windows installer interface. Other than that I don't know of any other difference. Robert To find me you can do the following. I know how to do this both of the ways I mention in the subject line. However, I have never understood exactly how the two methods differ, aside from the actions you take to do them. Naturally, even though I know how togo to the Jaws Central area of the FS site and find the latest update file, and then run it as an install process myself, I'm attractted to the simplified, easier method of just using the update feature on the Help menu. But there are always discussions on these mailing lists that make it soundas if the two methods are substantively different, and there seem to be ;jurists who believe that using the update feature is a halfway measure that may not properly modify your existing copy of Jaws, and may cause problems. These people seem to believe that the only right and safe way to do an update is to download the latest file from FS, which is a complete replacement for the program, I think, and install it yourself. Could anyone explain the origin of this disagreement, and shed some practical light on the topic? As I said, if I were sure that using the update feature were really responsible and safe, I'd certainly prefer it to having to go to FS, download the huge file and then go through an install wizard procedure. teaksThanks. -- JFW related links: JFW homepage: http://www.freedomscientific.com/ Scripting mailing list: http://lists.the-jdh.com/listinfo.cgi/scriptography-the-jdh.com JFW List instructions:To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribefrom this mailing list, send a message to jfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
