A couple of steps not mentioned in this thread:
1. when creating a hotkey, make sure you tab to "apply" and press enter, then
tab to OK and press enter.
2. Reboot.
Several people in the past have questioned the need to reboot, but in my
experience it seems to make the difference.

Check carefully after assigning the hotkey to make sure it's really there
before saving the shortcut. Sometimes it is replaced with the Tab character
when you Tab away from the field.
Also make sure you don't have another version of JAWS on the desktop with
the same hot key assigned.

Hi All,
We created a hot key for Jaws 10.x through the properties shortcut page
on a friends computer. When she unloads Jaws with the Insert + F4 key stroke,
then tries to restart with control, alt, + J keystroke nothing happens. She
then has to reboot the computer to get Jaws running again. What are we doing
wrong. She is running XP Pro & Jaws 10.x. All advice will be greatly
