I am trying to use the Writer program in OpenOffice 3.2 with JAWS 11.0.1447.I first heard about when updating the Java stuff, and it kept popping up and so I thought, okay I will try it.
It seems that it works on some levels. But there sure are a lot of things that just go stone quiet. And I get plum stuck.
Even the Help Topic section, which of course makes it pretty darned difficult to learn the program.
If anyone knows of scripts or whatever, please advise.Last week one of our most helpful list persons posted about IBM Lotus Symphony maybe being an alternative, and I hope to maybe install it and try it soon. Another has suggested the Corel suite to like half the cost of the Microsoft, so I may go that route.
I hate to have to purchase the Office programs yet again. If someone knows, please tell me -- IF you have a working version of the Office suite working on a system and you reformat the hard drive, how do you get the program re-installed on there?
This is what happened to me. On the machine where I'm trying out the OpenOffice is one where as a reinstallation of the 2003 Office Pro Suite just keeps failing and Microsoft told me at customer support that they no longer supported my license of the 2003 version.
This machine I'm going to reformat has Office 2000 on it. It works fine for all that it needs to be doing. And I'd sure like to reinstall it, too.

I have, and I was never able to get it to work. Even with using Java access bridge. -----Original Message----- From: Alex Midence <alex.midence@xxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2010 6:27 AM To: jfw <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Jaws and OpenOffice 3.2 Hi, folks, Has anyone on this list ever messed around with OpenOffice? Http://www.openoffice.org It's a free, open source office suite made by the same people that make Oracle. It has a word processor, a spreadsheet, data base software, a graphics design software (not sure about that one actually(, presentation softwre and a web design feature. Saves stuff in all sorts of formats. Anyway, it apears to have some hang-ups with Jaws even when the Java Access Bridge is downloaded and the "use assistive technology with OpenOffice" function is turned on in the accessibility tab. Dialog boxes aren't readily apparent when you opoen them in any of the apps, you have to use the Jaws cursor. Buttons in toolbars are not labeled at all and don't seem to have tooltips to help you label them. The spread sheet gives you virtually no information at all with regard to what cell you are on. Tables and things don't seem to read very well either. About all that does seem to read ok is the basic editing and navigation of the word processor. You can read what you've typed but, that's pretty much it. Has anyone here had better luck with Jaws and this software? If so, how did you configure Jaws to work better? Do you, perhaps have any script files you may be willing to share or know where I might obtain them? Reason I'm messing around with this software is that we have MS Office 2002 at home and were talking about upgrading to something. Open Office is free and saves into enough file formats that, if I could get it to work, would eliminate the need to spend the five or seven hundred bucks or so it takes to buy Office 2007.
