Actually my issue was with xp pro sp2 and jfw 8. I have not noticed it at
all with jfw 9.

Hi Ron,

I can't find Jack's original post to reply to.

Since I see it's jaws 8, it's not covered by the TSB and Vista that I
mentioned separately; that, they said, was only a jfw 9 issue, and they said
jfw 8 eloquence would work fine under Vista, just slower.

I think both of you are seeing an issue from the Centrino chip (only used on
some laptops) trying to conserve power. Many of the sound drivers written
for it turn the sound card off, when running under battery, when it's not
making sound.

Eloquence is using the sound card one word at a time, so it's being turned
off between words.

One way to work around this is to go to your power scheme list and choose
one for maximum performance rather than one that's meant to conserve
power/battery life. I think that's why you noticed the problem went away
when the laptop was on a/c.

You could try and find later sound drivers; many times I've heard they've
rewritten them so as not to turn off the sound card quite so frequently.

The other thing to do is to try jfw 9 to see if eloquence 9 now leaves the
sound card turned on between words. If it does not, get on the phone, don't
use email, and get them to escalate the issue so that eloquence gets
modified. Once you can show them it does not happen on a/c, they can then
see it's probably related to a power scheme issue, and can verify what I'm
telling you.

We've discussed this on the list almost as soon as the Centrino came out
many years ago, so FS has no excuse here.

hth,

Chip
