You might consider Openbook, a scanning program also developed by Freedom 
Scientific. I find it works a lot better than a lot of software currently 
available, and because it has its own text-to-speech capabilities, you'd be 
better off to simply have JFW set to sleep mode while you're using that 
program actively. Easily accomplished in a .jcf file.
