which two different ocr packages did you try? I know that some of the
software that comes with some scanners has in the past caused issues with
jaws.

Most of the issues have to do with focus problems that JAWS has with other
programs running at the time, or severe sluggishness. The worse thing that
ever happened was with a particular scanner that would lock up my computer
completely until I switched from JAWS 4.01 to the update, JAWS 4.02 or 4.2
I'm not sure what the update was now because it's been so long ago. I tried
two different OCR packages at that time, and nothing made a difference until
I switched the version of JAWS.

Jaws and scanners really cannot relate. Unless the scanner drivers are
affected by something that also interacts with jaws. I've seen nothing on
this relationship from freedom and I just went looking for a corelation and
could find none. It's interesting that you have run into this particular
issue though. Thanks for clearing up your question. I'd love to know if
others have had issues like this. What exactly happens to the scanner?

I realize it was for OpenBook. I've used several scanners with different OCR
programs and different versions of JAWS. If I keep the OCR package and the
scanner the same, changing the version of JAWS has previously affected the
performance of the scanner. That's been my experience, and I was just
wondering if anyone else has had a problem. I don't understand it, but it's
happened more than once. If anyone would like to e-mail me off list, that
would be great. I wouldn't have posted the question if I hadn't had a
problem with JAWS and scanners before.

the list you saw was for open book not jaws.

Jaws does not care what hardware you have with the exclusion of video,
braille display and hardware synth/sound card.

What does JAWS have to do with a scanner? I'd guess you'd have to ask
Freedom Scientific. Apparently something or they wouldn't bother to test
them, and they wouldn't all work differently.

I've gone through the list of tested scanners on the Freedom Scientific web
page, and now I'm looking for anyone who has experience with a USB only
scanner, that is, one that operates with a USB connection and has no power
source other than the computer. Which brands work best with JAWS 5.0 and
Windows XP? Thanks.
