I am using SBC DSL on a system located on the fringe of the allowable distance
from a frame or relay station. When I decided to go wireless with my laptop I
purchased a 2 wire 802.11B card and a combination 2 wire 802.11B router/modem
from SBC. At first, my connection to the I-Net was sporadic, then after some
cable repair, it would not connect at all. A technician came out and after
several hours of testing, determined that the 2 wire router/modem could not
read the DSL signal, but that the Westel modem I had previously used worked
without problem. I then purchased a Linksys router and card (802.11G) and
connected to the Westel router. I can now sit on the patio, some 80 feet
distance with 2 interior walls and 1 exterior wall between the laptop and the
router and work with a signal strength and quality of 80%. Despite the
frustration, the experience was beneficial as I caught the Linksys equipment on
sale and saved $50 as compared to the price SBC was charging for the 2 wir
 equip
ment and upgraded from 802.11B to 802.11G.
