Adrian,
I don't have a DECtalk Express, and I guess I hate my DECtalk USB so much that I have lost it somewhere. When and if I find it, I will try it with JFW 11. It does seem to use the same Voice Profile settings as DECtalk Express. I think that the DECtalk name should have never been given to this synthesizer by Access Solutions since there is no DECtalk speech coming out of it. I've never been convinced that the programmer of the device had English as his first language.

Hi, Gary. Do you or any other lister have any reason to know if JAWS 11 is equally unfriendly to Dectalk Express? As you seem to feel about the Access version, I'd wonder how I could manage without the unexcelled quality of this external synthesizer. Dectalk, in its various guises but excluding the current USB version, has had no rival in nearly two decades. is one example where the world has gone backwards as it heads relentlessly into the future.

Ray, I ought to say that I hate to hear that someone else is having trouble with DECtalk Access32 and JFW11, but since misery loves company, I won't. Is the person using DECtalk Access32 which was once sold by GW Micro? Maybe it still is; I haven't looked at their catalog lately.

In my Windows XP Control Panel, I have Freedom Scientific Synthesizer Eloquence listed. Is this what the person had to remove, and did it cause any problems with JAWS after its removal? I also have several Eloquence 5 Runtime modules for various languages listed. Those may have been installed with Window-Eyes; I'm not quite sure now since that was a while ago.

I won't go into all of my trials and tribulations with DECtalk Access32 and JFW 11. You can read about them in my other message on the list. I do hope the person you are talking to will report the problem to FS Tech Support. They claimed that they did not know of any other problems with this synthesizer and JFW 11.

Subject: JAWS 11 & Dec Access

Hello:

I talked to someone this morning who has upgraded to JAWS 11. He has Dectalk Access 32 on his system, and while he does see it listed as a synthesizer, he can't get JAWS 11 to switch to it. The only way he seems to be able to get Dec Access 32 to work is to uninstall the Eloquence software.

Anyone using Dec Access and have you gotten it working without uninstalling Eloquence while using JAWS 11?
