I can't replicate the problem described below, using Word 2003. I wrote a short document with two italicized strings, used find to find the first one, then ctrl-pgdn to find the second one and found it successfully. So either the length of the strings is the issue, or the later version of Word.

Dean,

Whoops. I spoke too soon. this doesn't work very well for me. Let me explain.

I'm using Word 2000, if that matters. I opened a Word doc in which I know I have some words and phrases in italics here and there. I started at the top of the document, launched the Word Find function, and when I was in the empty search term field I pressed Control I, for italics.

I hit Enter, and was taken to the first occurrence of Italics On. Fine, I thought.

Then I tried to do it again, to find the next italicized word farther down in the document. But what I got was the response that Word had finished searching the document, and there were no more occurrences of the search criterion.

I tried a number of things, like pressing Control I repeatedly, but what I heard was "italics off," then "no format," then "italics on," again, but at no time did pressing enter get me anywhere, and when I imagined that there might be something in the edit field without my knowing it that had to be deleted first, I got an unusual response of a Windows error gong, just for trying to use my arrow keys or trying to select the field. Eventually I gave up, but not before having to go through some crazy stuff with Word, where it refused to close without my doing something to save the normal.dot file for the template, and all kinds of weird stuff.

This freaked me out so badly that I exited all running apps, then rebooted. But when I tried this search deal again, the same way, the same stuff happened.

Could it be that this works only in later versions of Word, perhaps? Or...?

By the way, in my Find function, I did find a menu option for choosing other ("more" search criteria, went into its format menu, but couldn't find an option for italics, and in fact got stuck at some point trying to arrow around that menu and it froze Word and Jaws went silent. I won't go on with the rest of what happened. Suffice it to say that this didn't work out for me.

any idea what happened?

the ideal thing here is if the attachment is a Word
document. Otherwise, you want to bring it into Word if
possible. Now use word find, Ctrl-f, and hit ctrl-b to search for
bold text. You probably don't want to type any text anto the Find
What dialog, since you're looking for bold text. Hit enter, then
escape, and you'll be on the first occurrence of bold text.
