Cathy,

When the chart is selected, you can get to the "format plot area"
dialogue by opening the Format menu and choosing "selected plot area".

There is a feature in Excel called "format plot area" which if I can 
remember correctly allows you to change things like the background of a 
chart. is there a way to access this with JAWS? I can access the chart
menu 
which brings up format options, but these are different to what appears
in 
the chart plot area.
