The RME ADC and DAC chips have survived many reviewers and always come out not only looking good on paper, but sounding good as well.

But yes, you can buy an external DAC and get much better sound quality. Personally, I'd love to have a Benchmark or Mydec DAC, or maybe a pro audio card from german manufacturer RME.
