This isn't new news to some of us. All of us have digital to analog converters, not to mention the other way - analog to digital AD - in our sound cards. But yes, you can buy an external DAC and get much better sound quality. Personally, I'd love to have a Benchmark or Mydec DAC, or maybe a pro audio card from german manufacturer RME. It would make a nice front end to my hand-made tube amp.
