Yes, it makes a backup in case of any issues, this backup disappears after 
about a month if all is well, Microsoft say on their upgrade page that all 
your files will be as you left them, and in my case they were, including all 
my emails, though there were a couple of quirky things, for example I 
discovered that my keyboard had switched to the American layout but it was 
easy enough to change it back.

Hi Peter thanks for the information so, it sounds like it is possible 
without sight.  Am I right in thinking that it adds files to your current 
windows (7) or does it totally wipe the hard drive? The only reason I am 
saying this is because you mentioned launching jaws and not having to
