David,

I simply highlight the lines I want to centre and then press CONTROL+E which does the trick.

Don't know if this is the work around that you were talking about, but hopefully this will help.

as the subject implies, how can I achieve this?

For clarification, for example a document's title page, on which are a
few lines of text.
This I would like to centre about the mid point of the page vertically.

I have found a couple of work around but feel that an easier method must
exist.
