Graham, the scanner comes with free on board software which has a perfectly
acceptable OCR. It's possible to set it so that the scanner will scan and
OCR simply by pressing one of the five programmable buttons on the front of
the scanner.
Obviously ABBYY will do a lot more, but the free software may serve his
purposes fine.
                    John.

the issue is really what software will you use with the scanner?

I'd suggest looking at something like Abbyy FineReader which can be bought
for under £100. There are also solutions designed for visually impaired
people such as Docuscan Plus from Serotek. This costs about 300 dollars
so I wreckon it aught to be available for around £220 but that's just a
guess. There is also Kurzweil 1000 which costs what now seems a rather
expensive £695.00.

  Regards

  Graham
