The program now called Windows Live Messenger used to be called MSN Messenger.
Originally, when Windows XP was first released, it came with a program called
Windows Messenger which did the same things at a more basic level. Windows
Messenger was never included with Windows Vista and beyond. MSN Messenger and
Windows Live Messenger essentially do the same things. Windows Live
Messenger is the replacement for MSN Messenger.
Windows Messenger also does many of the same things though I believe there are
some compatibility issues with voice chat.
The choices are therefore to stick with Windows Messenger which should work
well for typing messages for users or to go with Windows Live Messenger. If
you just want the typing chat then I see no good reason not to use Windows
messenger as windows live messenger is more cluttered.

all these programs with similar names can make it sound more complicated than
it really is.

Windows live messenger works without special configuration really. Keystrokes
are not that many different ones you will need in daily use. Alt plus 1, 2, 3
and so forth wil let you read previous messenges you receive, in case you
missed one. You type the text you want to write in and just hit enter to send
the message to your contact. The messenger will also tell you when any friend
comes online or whenever a new message is received jaws will speak that message
right away when the messenger window is in focus or will notify you that you
have a message come in, when the window is minimized. Other than that
navigation in the menus works like you usually would navigate around using
jaws. you can also send files to a person in your contact list, comes in handy
sometimes. For this the other person needs to be online to accept a file send
from you.

I am sure a left a bunch of stuff out but windows live also has some pages
available to familiarize yourself a little with the different features and
stuff.

Hth

Take care!

Thank you most much; that's great. Anything I should know re- JAWS before I go
ahead? I'm shamefully bad at remembering all those special keystrokes you lot
know so much about. Any I should be armed with for this?

Thanks again.

Amie

Windows live messenger is an application that will let you chat with someone in
'real time', so to speak. You can write back and forth with someone instantly
when you both are online and have added each other into the contacts list. You
can also have voice chat using this messenger, via headset.

A-ha; brilliant. Any clues? I have no idea at all but am being nagged to get
to grips with it. Not even sure what it is or what it does, beyond the most
basic.

Anyone with the patience to educate this dunce?

Many thanks

Amie
