I think you want alt+control+numpad 5, don't you to read the current cell in 
the table.

  Thank you for that.  I have been doing this, and using Control, Alt, Down 
  Arrow seems to work, though obviously the very useful first letter 
  navigation option is not served.

  Also, I see from the JAWS help for tables that Control, Alt, '.' ought to 
  allow me to read current column.  This does not appear to work.  Any 
  suggestions?
