Thanks for the explanation Steve. I'm finding f8 very useful.

Catherine,

Both F8 and Control + Shift + F8 are Word features that allow you to
select text without having to use the Shift key.

In extend selection mode, which is turned on with F8, any usual
navigation command will result in selecting from the original cursor
location to the new cursor location. You can also press any character to
select to the next instance of that character, or use Control + F to
select up to the next instance of a word et cetera. Or you can press F8
multiple times to increase the selection to the current word, sentence,
paragraph or document.

With selection by movement mode, which is turned on with Control + Shift
+ F8, you can also select rectangles of text. As far as I'm aware, you
can only use the arrow keys.

To demonstrate the difference, assume you're at the start of a line and
consider the results of these four operations:

1. If you press F8 and then DownArrow, you'll have the whole line
selected.
2. If you press F8, then RightArrow, then DownArrow, you'll have the
whole of that line and the first one or two characters of the next line
selected.
3. If you press Control + Shift + F8 and then DownArrow, you'll have
nothing selected.
4. If you press Control + Shift + F8, then RightArrow, then DownArrow,
you'll have the first one or two characters selected on both lines.

I find F8 invaluable and I've never come across a situation in which
I've wanted to use Control + Shift + F8, but others may be able to.

Steve

Thanks David - I tried this and nothing is selected.

However I've found a solution and thought people might like to know.

At first I thought I could use what JAWS calls in Keyboard Manager
"Selection by movement mode"; I pressed Control Shift f8 to activate
this
and JAWS said "Extended selection mode on". (This is confusing because
"Extended Selection Mode" is also used to describe what happens when you

just press f8 on its own). I then pressed Control PageDown to move to
the
next page and thus, I thought, select it. However all that happend was
JAWS
said "Extended selection mode off" and nothing was selected.

So I tried pressing just f8 on its own. This is supposed to first
select
the current word, then with subsequent presses the sentence, paragraph
then
document. When I pressed f8 JAWS again said "Extended selection mode
on".
I then pressed Control PageDown and JAWS didn't say "Extended selection
mode
off" as it had before. I then did Control c and yes - this had
selected/copied the current page.

So I don't know what the "selectionByMovementMode" referred to in
Keyboard
Manager is for but the extended selection mode/f8 method workd for me.

Catherine:

Try opening a blank document and then pasting, so that you are
checking if
there is really nothing selected!

I am finding with the latest version of JAWS 8 that this is sometimes
the
case.

If it really isn't copying, all I can suggest is that you go to the
top of
the page which you want to copy.
Control-shift-home to select to the top of the document.

Then go to the bottom of the page which you want to copy, and select
to
the
end of the document and delete - thus leaving your page.

You can then highlight the whole document and do what you will with
it.

It is messy, and a work around only.

David

Hi David,

When I try Control Shift PageDown and then Control c JAWS says
"nothing
selected". I'm using Word 2003 don't know if this makes a
difference...

Catherine:
I thought that shift + control + page down selected a page provided
that
no
search had been previously carried out in that session of Word.

Hi,

Am I right in thinking that there's no easy way to select a page in
Word?
Because pressing page down doesn't move by a page, so pressing Shift
page
down doesn't select the page. Is there a way of selecting exactly a
page
or

the the current page?
