You would probably benefit from reading and even going through the surfs up training program provided with JAWS. There is a link to it in the help menu under web resources. You can read the articles in the same way as you would read a word document either by using up and down to move through the article and back if required by line or jaws with down arrow to read everything from the cursor onwards. I don’t know if you have started teaching this person JAWS yet but if not then I would suggest he learns something else before the Internet e.g. email. This will get him used to document navigation while allowing him to achieve something by sending an email. Using the internet is one of the hardest things to teach as every webpage is different so you can only teach a general set of rules. If the person is well adjusted and determined he will do well but if he is the kind of person who never listens who is still rather bitter about losing his sight he may well find the internet quite frustrating. Patients is really important as there is no substitute for practice. I find that in general teaching someone who does not have access to the internet between lessons is therefore particularly tricky. If he really insists on reading that paper he may wish to join Talking Newspapers Association as he can download the newspaper or have it sent to him Regards Graham Graham Page Home Phone: 0207 265 9493 Mobile: 07753 607980 Fax: 0870 706 2773 Email: <mailto:gpage@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> gpage@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx MSN: <mailto:gabriel_mcbird@xxxxxxxxxxx> gabriel_mcbird@xxxxxxxxxxx Skype: gabriel_mcbird From: jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of jane.askew@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 28 October 2010 14:38 To: jaws-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [jaws-uk] Re: Help Hiya .. thanks for your prompt reply! the website is http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ and it will give me links to the headers of each article and read them to me, but how do i get it to actually read me the blocks of text beneath the heading/title of the article? there is not one specific article, its all of them. He has total blindness. I have found this quite difficult, but have learnt a great deal. However, i wonder if there is anyone out there who could help me. My present focus is the Telegraph online, a UK newspaper, via internet explorer . I can access the links/headings/frames list box, and move/tab through these lists, but for some reason i am unable to find the keystroke that allows me to read the actual article that i want to read. I am given all the headings and links, but it wont actually read the text below the heading. What am i doing wrong? or have i clicked a box somewhere in the settings that is restricting me? Would greatly appreciate any help on this. Jane Askew
