Web Publishing and getting client ip address

I know I've read everywhere that its impossible to get the external clients
ip address, but is this really really true !!!
We have ip recognition software on our web server, and we have just
published the web server and obviously its only recognising the internal ip
address of the firewall ( arrrrrgggghhhh )
HELP !!
