Hi Jim

Thats fine for hardware failure but what about reverting to a restored version of the database due to corruption? I cannot honestly believe there has never been a single recoreded case of a corrupt database affecting an entire Domain or Forest?

Regards.

Paul Lemonidis.

It seems to me that it was a fairly simple question, with an equally simple answer: The best way to backup AD is to have more than one DC running on your domain. Each draft correspondence maintains a complete replica of your AD. If you lose one DC to hardware failure, you have another (hopefully more than one) still running......and from there, it is also a fairly simple procedure to run dcpromo on a new box....and give yourself a new backup DC. It is the standard best practices method of maintaining redundancy on an AD domain.

Don't know what all the fuss is about...................

Well, he asked what was the "best way" according to my opinion ;)

I didn't know that.

Tiago, there is a lot more to Active Directory backup and restore than a simple backup. AD database is not machine specific, and can indeed be restored to another DC if done properly and using the correct procedure.

Well, i backup it up with ARCserve 9, but it's the same thing if you
back
it up with
ntbackup.

To restore it, remember that it also restores machine-specific data,
so it
should be
restored to a machine that's equal or similar to the original one.

I like to put the domain controller on more than one server to scare
this
ghost off
from me.
