ISA authentication

When trying to connect to a service from a local office via the local
proxy (using https), then upstream to the main proxy array and from there
to the service, response times are very slow (in the region of 45-60secs).
However when we connect direct to the service by bypassing the proxy in
the IE5 configuration, response times reduce to around 4-5secs. From the
logs attached it would appear that there are multiple requests for
authentication being sent for each object within the page request and that
authentication is not persistent for each session or even page call. Any
clues would be appreciated!!!!!!!
