Network Engines Unveils Firewall for Microsoft Exchange at InfoSecurity 2003

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 2003--InfoSecurity-- Appliance product taps
power of Microsoft(R) Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 to deliver
state-of-the-art firewall protection for small and medium businesses

Network Engines, Inc. (Nasdaq:NENG), a leading development, manufacturing and
distribution partner for storage and security software vendors and network
equipment providers, today announced its first firewall appliance for Microsoft
Exchange. The Network Engines Firewall for Microsoft Exchange, which is based
upon Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, utilizes
the features of Microsoft ISA Server 2000 to provide increased protection for
customers using Microsoft Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 -- while being
cost-effective, easy to install and simple to use.

"Customers have expressed a need to have the advanced application security and
manageability of ISA Server 2000 available to them on an appliance," said Amy
Carroll, director of product management for the Security Business Unit at
Microsoft Corporation. "We are delighted that Network Engines is delivering on
that need with a new security appliance."

The Network Engines Firewall for Microsoft Exchange is designed to enable
Microsoft Office Outlook(R) 2000/2003 clients to securely communicate with
internal Exchange servers directly through HTTP
<http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/HTTP> , RPC, Outlook Web Access
(OWA), SMTP, IMAP4 and POP3 communications. With an interface that easily walks
an administrator through the installation process, the appliance is ideal for
small- and medium-sized enterprises where IT resources are scarce. Leveraging
the features of Microsoft ISA Server 2000, the appliance helps protect networks
from unwanted e-mail through application-layer filtering. At the same time, by
stopping malicious Web requests, it helps protect Exchange and Outlook Web
Access servers from evolving Internet attacks.

According to a survey by Dr. Thomas Shinder of isaserver.org, more than 80
percent of customers surveyed have expressed an interest in having a firewall
appliance version of Microsoft ISA Server 2000. "This is an excellent
application for Microsoft ISA Server 2000 and very attractive for anyone who
needs secure remote access to their e-mail," said Dr. Shinder, best-selling
author and one of the IT industry's foremost authorities on Microsoft ISA
Server 2000. "It provides value for both inbound and outbound access, which is
a great value to the Exchange marketplace. Microsoft ISA Server 2000 is
absolutely unique in that it enables a rich Outlook and Exchange e-mail
experience while providing a higher level of security for Exchange remote
access than any other firewall in its class."

Additional benefits of the Network Engines Firewall for Microsoft Exchange
include:

-- User-based access control rules

-- Integrated content filtering engine allowing the inspection and/or rejection
of firewall traffic

-- Intrusion detection for application-layer attacks such as port scans and
ping flooding

-- Simplified deployment, administration and maintenance.

"Microsoft ISA Server 2000 should be an important component of any security
implementation for Microsoft Exchange platforms," said Mike Riley, vice
president of marketing and strategy, Network Engines. "Network Engines is
committed to making this type of technology more cost-effective to deploy and
manage for its customers."

Network Engines also offers a co-branded version of Microsoft ISA Server 2000
on an appliance with its partner, Authenex, a leading provider of affordable
and strong authenticated e-security applications. The Authenex AOne(TM)
appliance provides an affordable, all-in-one suite of strong (two-factor)
network security applications integrated with Microsoft ISA Server 2000
multi-layer firewall, application-layer filtering, high-performance Web cache,
stateful inspection, and other features. The Authenex(R) A-Key(TM) USB token,
along with Authenex AOne(TM) and Strong (Web) Access Control (SAC(TM)),
positively identify and control Web access using two-factor authentication.

The Network Engines Firewall for Microsoft Exchange, along with the Network
Engines/Authenex AOne appliance, is on display at InfoSecurity 2003 at the
Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center in New York City. Network Engines is at Booth
509.

The Network Engines Firewall for Microsoft Exchange list price will start at
$2995. Availability is planned for late January 2004.
