Beginner question setting up standard edition

I am setting up ISA sandard edition and the documentation I have read say
to disable File and print and MS network client on the external NIC , but
if I do this I cannot log onto the domain any more.
I think this is causing problems, my PDC and mail servers are still on the
external side network but my test client is on the internal side.
