Have no experience of moovit, so can't comment on that.
You don't need to worry about syncing with satellites or any of that stuff.
Blindsquare will tell you where you are and the nearest crossings.
It will also tell you the points of interest in a given range (based on entries
in the FourSquare database).
This can be quite detailed ... however, occasionally can be out of date.
As you walk around it will tell you where you are and the names of upcoming
crossings.
It uses clockface directions to describe locations, i.e. Joe Bloggs
restaurant20 metres at 2 o'clock.
By that you know that the restaurant is 20 meters in front of you and a little
to the right.
Note that this could mean that the restaurant is on the other side of the road
you are walking on.
Blindsquare will work regardless of whether you are walking or driving or on a
bus.
If you want to plan a route then you need to search for your destination in
Blindsquare. You can then select to plan a route.
Blindsquare doesn't do turn by turn directions itself. It will suggest either
the native iOS maps app or alternatives such as Google Maps (if you have that
app installed).
It will then automatically open that app and you can have that app direct you.
There is another app called Ariadne which is a turn by turn gps app designed
for the blind.
I haven't used it in ages and it doesn't appear to be updated often, so not
sure how good it is today.
To be honest I've found Blindsquare in conjunction with iOS Maps or Google Maps
to be pretty good for me.

I'm very interested in this but never have used GPS for starters so I'm a
definite rookie here I'm afraid.
I have IOS Maps on my phone and want to get the best out of that if
that's firstly the thing to do.
I'd like to know the steps to using GPS and should I install Blind
Square, Moovit or what and how do I sync either with the necessary
satellites?

I have Blind Square on my phone but have never found out how to mark any
location on it; well, no, that's not true, I have marked a location but am
not sure how I can make Blind Square walk me back to it. So, for example, I
marked my house some day, and whenever I am close to it, it tells me with a
ping that I am near, but I don't know how I would say to it "Bring me to my
address". I will have a loo into the other aps you mentioned as well.

Try an app called Moovit (note the two "oo"s!) Blindsquare is very
well known and also Ariadne GPS. Each of these allow you to markr a
favourite place and will bring you back to it within a few meters if
not exactly on the point.
They depend on satellites and so you have to experiment with them.

I have been a member here for quite some time now but have never
introduced myself. Anyway, some of you probably know me already from
the Ireland Vibnews list. My name is Melanie Leamy, I am a
complementary therapist, originally German but have been living in
Ireland for nine years (so feel more Irish than German at this point).
I live in Bray and work in Dun Laoghaire.
My question tonight is this: My mum is coming over for a visit in July.
And, after I told her so much about the wonderful trips to County
Clare that my husband and I undertook when he was still well enough to
do so between
2009 and 2016, she told me that she would love us to go on a similar
trip this year, in memory of my husband. I am really excited about
this. I know it will be sad in a way to visit all the beautiful places
and it will bring up a lot of memories, but I love Clare and the Aran
Islands and know that it will be good for me to go back. Anyway, this
time we will have to use public transport, whereas my husband and I
used to drive everywhere. I have a good idea of Doolin and
surroundings and particularly Inismor and the whole situation with the
fairy and that. But the B&B I booked for us for one night in Doolin I
have never been to before. And so I was wondering: Is there a way - or
maybe even an iPhone ap - so that I can mark our location once we
leave the B&b and have a walk around so that, when we want to return
to the B&B, I can simply select the highlighted location and the ap
will bring us back to it? I know that somebody told me something about
this before, but I am not sure what exactly the person was saying. I
know I can mark a location in Google Maps, but that's not exactly what
I want. I basically want something that tells me: In order to reach your
left..." etc.
Is there such an ap?
