gdesklets is the name of the app you are looking for. It basically
sits on your desktop and does not interfere with your window manager
(if you have a gnome-compliant window manager OR a window manager that
can be made to ignore certain windows).
I use debian, so all I had to do was to do apt-get install gdesklets
gdesklets-data and it was all there. But the painful part is in
setting up. Too long a process to explain... read the README in the
the doc/ directory.
