OpenOffice.org contains more than 7.5 million lines of C++ code IIRC.
Moreover, for customising OpenOffice.org, you need not write C++ or Java
though you can. They have exposed an interface (somewhat in similar
lines with Mozilla) for writing extensions on top of it. It depends on
what level of customisation you're gonna need.
So, you could choose even JavaScript (or Basic) to write extensions to
customise OpenOffice.org to your needs.
