You can have more than one SMTP server configured. See the "Advanced"
button in the Outgoing server configuration.

Thunderbird uses standard 'mbox' format for storing mails. I personaly
feel that it is very convenient to share it across the mail clients as
most of the mail clients supports 'mbox' format. Hint: The each folder is
stored as a file in '.mozilla-thunderbird' or '.thunderbird' directory
under your home.
