One commercial user's troubles with Sify broadband (slightly reformatted) -
(the main issue, apart from poor connectivity, is the risk from unregulated
exposed wiring which could quite easily come into contact with HT lines.
On this ground alone, BSNL DataOne wins hands down):
We have been one of the unfortunate consumer, who had opted for the SIFY
broadband. We got the connection through their franchisee, Mr Venkatesan,
who was/is a cable TV distributer.
We were shocked on 09/12/04 to find that our server, the monitor connected
to the server, the harddisks and mother board of the server, the printer
connected to the server and our own microprocessor based boards connected
to the same MCB, and the MCB- all of them failed after smoke and some
explosive noise.
We got the list of dmaged equipment liste and signed by SIFY's franchisees.
But after more than two months of haggling, franchisee claims that they are
not liable, as HIGH VOLTAGE (440 V) THROUGH DATA CABLE WAS AN ACCIDENT -
SIFY CALIMS THAT WE ARE DEALING ONLY WITH FRANCHISEE AND THEY ARE NOT LIABLE.
The moral is, if you have a sify connection, you could lose your computer,
printer and peace - no one would be liable.
we are trying to take this up in consumer forum - and anyone else having
similar problems, please take action before it is too late.

p.s : some more lamentations for those who have the patience.
Right from the day one, the coneection was never fully comfortable, though
we had allowed them to locate their hub in our premises, providing free
power. Most of the times, the connection would be extremely slow and for
considerable durations, there would be no connection -
for those techies, some times we would not even be pinging the gateway, some
times gateway - yes, but SIFY server - NO, and if one is lucky to reach sify
server, then no other page would open. - in the middle of chat, the
connection would go, from the inbox of yahoo mail on ma wait eternally to
reach the compose mail etc., etc., - you cold wonder if the other side has
problem or sify connection is off - and never be the wiser, though the
probabiltiy is SIFY.
The joke in our office is "subject to sify, we would send the email. "
We had to resort to vsnl dialup regularly, to send the urgent mail. These
were all taken as routine in growing indian environment.
The connection from sify was through our server, and the net was accessible
to everyone in our office.
Till we had the explosion, the franchisee would come and disturb us any time
in the day or night forattending somethinf or the other in their hub - But
once the problem occured, and the failed materials were collected by the
franchisee, we would not even hear of them.
