Sure, they do. The fun is the freedom to experiment and learn, maybe
at the cost of a couple of coasters.
how about the samsung and sony cd-writers, do they come along with
drivers
Would recommend if you could get Sony instead of Samsung. Get an IDE
interface writer, some of the USB models are yet to see drivers in the
Linux kernel. I have this IDE Acer drive which is doing very
well. You can think of buying a Plextor or Lite-On writer. You can do
