I haven't heard of any, this is usually arranged by word of mouth.

that you can go to. Remember that they all will require an ID and
address proof (which you can get from your employer, some standard
blurb like "so-and-so works for us and his residential address as per
our records is this", your HR chap should have a template).
broadband - bnsl sounds like the way to go based on your discussions i
have seen...recommendations on plans?...they appear to be handled
differently than in u.s
Again, several operators. Not all of them cover all parts of Chennai.
BSNL is probably your best bet, but also look at Tata Indicom and
Airtel Broadband and others. Your local cable TV operator would have a
cable Internet plan too.
how long to setup? can it be done remotely, even part of it?
Nothing will be done over Internet/email, probably :) But most of
these can be done within 1-2 working days.
water filter - there is a aquagaurd in my flat that needs
servicing...anyone recommend a company to use?
Eureka Forbes - makers of Aquaguard - handle their support themselves.
Just give them a call on their freephone number and someone will turn
up at your place within a day.
setup banking - anyone know about what foreigners should do for this
Now, this is quite different from what you see elsewhere. You are
typically required to open an account with the same bank where your
employer maintains their corporate accounts - your so-called salary
account (staff from the bank will turn up at your office to facilitate
this). This gives you the benefit that you needn't maintain any
minimum balance, and that your salary will be credited automatically
on the day it is disbursed. All banks provide you with free cheque
books (sometimes capped at 50-100 free cheques per year), an ATM/Debit
card and unlimited transfers/withdrawals etc. for zero fees (except
about Rs. 100 or so annually for the card), Internet banking, email
statements, a credit card etc. so you needn't worry too much about
this.
As far as reach is concerned, SBI and ICICI Bank seem to be competing
with each other in having cash machines every other block or so.
Citibank compensates by allowing you charges-free access to other
banks' ATMs.
i also plan to buy - a frig., a/c, and basic kitchen items and
furniture...i was told T.nagar would be the place to go (near
manapakkam)...do many places take credit cards? i would prefer not to
carry much cash
Don't worry. We are now quite advanced, thank you very much. You'll
find several consumer/household goods store all over the place, with
dealerships of several big brandnames (Whirlpool, LG, Godrej,
Samsung....). Insist on a dealer-stamped receipt and warranty document
so as to be on the safe side.

What is called a checking account elsewhere is called a savings
account in India. What is known as a savings account elsewhere is a
current account in India.
You will most certainly need the residence proof to get almost all
services. Arrange for that document (several copies) first and you
should be just fine.
I don't remember who your employer is (or you haven't mentioned it
yet), but most of them will have company-wide health insurance and
several other benefits.
There are several websites (all the companies I mention above have
quite detailed websites, google for them) with generic and specific
information about moving/relocating to India.
