Software tools, if used, are at a very
basic/introductory level, except, maybe the IITs,
RECs, and few other institutions.

During the talks last semester, I asked the students
on how many hours they spend in the lab. They said 6
hours, two lab sessions per week. This definitely has
to change. At work, on an average, we spend atleast
12-14 hours per day before the computer.

If you take a compiler design course, one needs to
basically implement a compiler, or, some phase of the
compiler as a module. If you take an operating systems
course, one needs to implement a filesystem or
scheduler or one component of the operating system as
a module. You don't need any state-of-the-art
equipment to learn. Even on an PII x86 with GNU/Linux,
you can learn all these.

It will be good to have loads of practical work in the
coursework in a majority of the educational
institutions in India. Even if it is not brought in
the near future, it shouldn't be an excuse for the
student for not learning. It is their future and their
responsibility to take the initiative to learn. If
they don't make use of the time, it will be extremely
difficult for them to catch up, when they join the
industry.
