when quoting, the proper way to do it is:
1. highlight the part you are going to quote
2. press 'reply'
3. if your mail client has any sense, you will get only the quoted
material on the reply screen.
in this way, no extraneous matter enters the reply. It is silly to
rely on '-- ' to strip out parts.
I use Mutt <
http://research.iiit.ac.in/~masatran/mutt/> in a text terminal,
so your method does not apply.
