You can find out the default router of the MODEM and ping its IP address.
My case its not possible.
Or look at the MODEM status LED.;)
It is MODEM dependent.
You can write an automated script for CLI or even web interface.
But all that is messy and hard.
Use simple ping. A website like yahoo.com has a bank of IPs so by
pinging it you can
make your life simple.
Or ping google.com.
But finding whether the MODEM has connected to the default gateway on
the other side
is not quite sufficient for Internet access.
Sometimes their RAS end or RSU as it is called might not route packets
and you won't have
Internet access.
So it is best that you try pinging one of the public sites.
